Between Folds / Envelopes: {A+4}

A collection of envelopes from 2001 – 2009.
142 x 105 cm

It is no surprise that the first in Francisca’s Between Folds series is perhaps one of the most overlooked, yet intricately pleasing, paper designs of them all – the inside of the envelope. So familiar and quickly discarded are these papers, that we are blind to their tiny and intricate designs, ignoring them for the letter inside. Once turned inside out, their tidy and miniature patterns are comforting in their familiarity, yet newly revealed to be a celebration of design. Herringbone, houndstooth and pinstripes are repetitions borrowed from fabric; printed in pale blue and lilac, they mimic the shirts of the suited senders. Tiny dots, circles and honey-comb hexagons are stamped and inverted, while bricks, row upon row, build like blocks of business and commerce; patterns of structure and order playfully coloured for the humble messenger. In a reversal of role, the outsides of these envelopes are hidden behind – squares of white with the occasional postmark – all black, red and orange, brash in comparison to their subtle and brilliant insides.
